Stress Relief for Teens

Teenagers often maintain a very rigorous schedule, including school, work, sports, dating, volunteering and socializing.  There are many life pressures that can arise during the teenage years that create stress for your teen, including drugs, bullying, body issues, fatigue, hormones and more.  To a teenager, it seems like no one understands them and the world can feel quite hard.

During these years, teenage stress does not have to take control.  It is important to interact with your teen, teaching them to identify their symptoms and develop proactive measures to combat them.  It is common for healthy teens to experience stress relief upon thinking the situation through, talking about their feelings and options with friends and trusted advisors, and identifying possible solutions on their own.  Rest is also a key component to combating high levels of stress during the teen years, something that most teens simply do not get enough of.

Coping with stress is an on-going process for everyone, but can seem particularly daunting to a teenager.  The more frequently they learn to address stress and develop their own unique methods of coping, the healthier and happier they will be.  Many teenagers cope with stress positively through painting, drawing, music and other ways to let their creativity shine through.  The important step here is for parents to step in with open lines of communication about dealing with stress in a positive manner, and not resorting to destructive behaviors such as smoking, drinking, drugs or eating disorders.
